Iraqi Prime Minister announced to speed up the project to ease the housing crisis. The Prime Minister called a meeting of officials from the Construction and Housing Ministry and other departments to discuss expediting the infrastructure to enable construction of the first housing units.
Iraq’s development for the new Sadr City suburb is in motion, with Prime Minister visit to the site being hailed as a step in the right direction. A experienced foreign firm has already been awarded a contract to carry out the designs for this project. The designs will be studied by a specialized committee, which will then award the project to another experienced company.
The new city planned by Iraq in its capital Baghdad will be launched before the end of 2023 and will comprise nearly 70,000 houses, which will accommodate over 500,000 people. Designs for the project are expected to be ready in October, 2023 and work to build the infrastructure will begin just afterwards. Obstacles for the project, which has been on the cards for many years, have been cleared. The project will be executed in stages and is intended to ease congestion in some areas of the capital. The Iraqi cabinet has already approved the project for the development of Sadr City, a key district suburb of Baghdad with a population of nearly one million.
